THE CAMPAIGN to bring the FIFA World Cup to Leicester is about to reach a key milestone, with the deadline for the city’s submission of interest just weeks away. To be considered as a host city for the 2018 or 2022 tournament, Leicester’s formal bid must be submitted to the England 2018 team by November 6th – and the team behind the city’s bid is pleased with its progress. Leader of the city council, Cllr Ross Willmott, said: “A successful World Cup bid would reap huge dividends for the city and county. “We know that the 2006 tournament created 50,000 new jobs and boosted tourism revenue by around 300 million euros in Germany – and the impact of the event on the country’s image should not be under-estimated. “If the World Cup comes to England, we need to do all we can to ensure Leicester and Leicestershire are part of the celebrations. “That’s why we’re working closely with our partners to make sure our bid is as robust – and irresistible – as possible.” Members of Leicester City Council’s cabinet will be updated on the bid’s progress and asked to endorse the submission of Leicester’s bid at their meeting on 5th October. The FA is expected to announce the cities that will form part of England’s bid this December, with FIFA announcing the host country for the 2018 tournament in December 2010. (ends)
