LEICESTER City fans showed their support for Leicester’s World Cup bid by taking their seats early in the Walkers Stadium on Saturday (8th).

Twenty minutes before City’s match against Swansea kicked off, a giant flag bearing the words ‘We’re Backing the Bid!’ was passed around the Kop – the stadium’s south stand.

Fans in the Kop then held the flag – which measures 8m x 6m – aloft in an impressive show of support.

Leicester City legend Alan Birchenall directed the flag’s progress through the stand from the pitch.

“With it being the opening game, it was nice to give the World Cup bid a bit of a boost,” he said.

“It was a great opportunity for the fans to show their support before the first game of the new season.”

More than 26,000 fans watched Leicester City come back from a goal down to beat Swansea 2.1 on Saturday. And city council leader, Cllr Ross Willmott, is urging those fans to get behind the city’s bid.

He said, “We're calling on fans to show their support for their club and their city by choosing Leicester as their preferred host city on the England 2018 Bid website,"

"We know that Leicester fans are amongst the most passionate in the country -  now we just need to harness that passion and convert it into votes.

"Let's show the FA how much we want to bring the FIFA World Cup to Leicester in 2018."

Leicester will find out in December, if it has been chosen as one of the host cities that will form part of England’s bid to host the 2018 FIFA World Cup.
