LEICESTER people have joined Gary Lineker as the stars of a new poster campaign supporting the city’s bid to host World Cup matches in 2018. Twelve designs, featuring local people dressed in the colours of the world, have gone up around the city centre, urging everyone in the
city to back the bid.
Gary Lineker said: "As someone who was lucky enough to have played in two World Cups, I know it’s no exaggeration to call the tournament the biggest event in the world.
"Millions of people around the world will be watching, and it would be absolutely brilliant if all those eyes could be on Leicester."
Fourteen-year-old Lily Chaudhry – who wears a Brazil kit in the posters – said: "I love football to bits and it would mean the world to me if the World Cup came to Leicester."
City council leader Ross Willmott said: "We need to prove to the England 2018 team that we really want the World Cup to come to Leicester.
"What we need is for everyone in the whole county to show they’re behind us by voting for Leicester on the England 2018 website."
Leicester will hand in its bid in November. The England 2018 bid team are expected to announce the host cities that will form part of England’s bid in December. Leicester’s bid team is being led by the city council and supported by a partnership including Prospect Leicestershire, the county council, Leicester City Football Club, Leicester Tigers, Leicestershire Police, Loughborough University and Leicester Shire Promotions.
