ANYONE who hasn’t yet voted for Leicester’s bid to be a World Cup host city in 2018 can now do so by text.

By texting the word ‘LEICESTER’ to 62018, people can register their support for the city’s bid to host group matches in the 2018 tournament.

While the number of votes alone won’t secure success for Leicester, popular support for the competition is a key factor for the decision-makers on the England 2018 team.

Cllr Ross Willmott, leader of the city council, said: “Texting your vote for Leicester’s bid takes just a few seconds but it could make a big difference.

“We need to show the England 2018 team that the people of Leicestershire are ready to welcome the FIFA World Cup to our city and county.

“Please text ‘Leicester’ to 62018 – and help bring the World Cup to the Walkers Stadium.”

Texts will be charged at standard network rates.

Votes must be registered within the next few weeks, as the cities that will form part of England’s official World Cup bid will be named in mid December.

Leicester is one of 16 English cities bidding to host FIFA World Cup matches in 2018. The city’s official bid will be handed in at Wembley on 26th November.
